Mini Biography

Michael Welch was born in Los Angeles on July 25, 1987. His acting career was launched at the age of 10 on the television series "Frasier" (1993) in 1998, playing young Niles. He later starred as the beloved Luke Girardi on the television series "Joan of Arcadia" (2003). Michael's versatility has been spotlighted in guest appearances on over 25 television shows. His unique ability to play very different types of characters was demonstrated on "Chicago Hope" (1994), where he played a Buddhist monk, and "Judging Amy" (1999), as an American Indian lost in the foster care system. In his guest appearance on "Stargate SG-1" (1997), Michael was highly acclaimed for his portrayal of Colonel Jack O'Neill cloned as an adult in Michael's 15-year-old body. Michael is no stranger to the stage, as he had the wonderful opportunity to play Sir Ian McKellen's son in "Enemy of the People" with the Royal National Theatre. Over the past several years Michael's talents have brought him recognition on the big screen. He has appeared in An American Crime (2007), My Suicide (2008), American Son (2008), Choose Connor (2007) and The Beautiful Ordinary (2007). Michael has recently completed his most challenging role in the indie movie Lost Dream (2008). He also stars in Day of the Dead (2008) (V) and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006). Watch for many of these films to come to theaters in 2008. Now 20, this actor has proved himself to be quite a multi-talented performer. In his ten-year career Michael has had success in movies, television, theater and even voice-over. He is one of the most prolific young actors working today and whether drama or comedy, his star shines brightly. Michael has been involved with the charity Kids with a Cause since 1999. He received the 2005 Star Innovative Award for his environmental contributions. Michael has received two young Artist Awards for his excellence in both film and television.

Trivia

Played a younger version of Colonel Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) in the "Stargate SG-1" (1997) episode, 'Fragile Balance.' His "Joan of Arcadia" (2003) co-star Mary Steenburgen has been mentioned several times on that series as being O'Neill's heartthrob.

Was writing a one-man show, but this was put on hold for his other projects and probably will never be finished.

Part of what got him into acting was his flexible ability to accurately emulate other roles and dialects.

Comments that after shooting the entire first season of "Joan of Arcadia" (2003), he was recognized just as equally from a single episode of "Stargate SG-1" (1997).

He is a skilled drummer.

He played drums in a band with another actor, Joey Zimmerman.

Has an older sister, Sarah, who is an Optometrist working in a VA Hospital.

As his eyes are blue in real-life, he had to wear contact lenses when playing the younger version of Colonel Jack O'Neill in the "Stargate SG-1" (1997) episode "Fragile Balance" as Richard Dean Anderson (who plays the usual version of the character) has brown eyes.

Has worked with two actors who appeared in versions of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers": Richard Dean Anderson (who he appeared with in the "Stargate SG-1" (1997) episode "Fragile Balance") played Adam McFadden in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" (1982), Russ Tamblyn (who he appeared with in the "Joan of Arcadia" (2003) episodes "Night without Stars", "Do the Math" and "Friday Night") played Gideon Pontipee in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954).

Is close friends with his "Joan of Arcadia" (2003) co-star Chris Marquette and Aaron Himelstein who played the recurring character Friedman on that series.

Appeared in episodes of two different television series which originally aired on January 21, 2001 on Fox: "The X Files" (1993) episode "Badlaa" and "Malcolm in the Middle" (2000) episode "New Neighbors."

The actresses who played his girlfriends, Mageina Tovah and Becky Wahlstrom, in "Joan of Arcadia" (2003) were eight and twelve years older than him respectively even though they were all supposed to be much the same age.

Got his first car, a Toyota Prius, in October 2004.

Has a nephew named Paul.

His family owns a dog named Charley. It was a runaway after the 1994 earthquake in Northridge, California that they adopted.

Andrew Dorsett, the Young Frasier to his Young Niles in "Frasier" (1993) episode "Where Every Bloke Knows Your Name," plays in a band with one of Welch's friends who is also one of his former drum instructors.

Has played both an autistic youth in the movie "United States of Leland", and a genius in the series "Joan of Arcadia".

His favourite TV show is "Family Guy" (1999).

Has worked with two different actors who were born on January 23, 1950: Richard Dean Anderson in the "Stargate SG-1" (1997) episode "Fragile Balance" and Richard Gilliland in the "Joan of Arcadia" (2003) episodes "Death Be Not Whatever" and "The Devil Made Me Do It".

His favourite films are Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) and The Matrix (1999).

He is a frequent co-star of his close friend Aaron Himelstein.
